Driveway, Driveway Apron and Sidewalk Weeds

With the cooler months upon us, now it is also a great time to address those unsightly driveway, driveway apron and sidewalk weeds.

To stop weeds from ruining your driveway and street edges, kill existing growth with a non-selective herbicide or concentrated vinegar, clean out the dirt using a tool or water hose, and permanently seal the cracks with a self-leveling concrete sealant or polymeric sand.

Kill Existing Weeds

· Spray weeds on a warm, dry day.

· Use a commercial non-selective weed killer or high-strength horticultural vinegar.

· Wait a few days for the plant and root system to die completely.

Clean Out Debris

· Scrape dead roots and packed dirt out of the cracks using a flathead screwdriver or hook knife.

· Flush the remaining dirt away with a garden hose.

Let the concrete or asphalt dry completely.

Seal the Cracks

· Fill wide expansion joints or gaps with a self-leveling exterior sealant like SikaFlex.

Use polymeric sand for pavers or shallow cracks, then mist it with water to harden.

The best way to prevent future weeds from growing would be to ensure your driveway is properly sealed and if not, institute a weekly preventative maintenance program to combat any potential weed growth.  Also, proper lawn maintenance that includes routine edging of the lawn will also help prevent the spread and growth of weeds.
